Twitter Fatigue...

Sunday, May 18 2008

I have Internet digerati envy.

My ego pushes me to be on the cutting edge so that you, dear reader, think I'm hip (at least when it comes to Internet tech...after all, how hip can a father of 3 really be?)

So, I sign up for Twitter and follow people (among other wacky things).

Some of them offer a lot of interesting "tweets," but far too many are getting into the "high noise, low signal" mode. I like the basic concept of Twitter as a micro-blogging platform (in fact, I entered a video in the "What is Twitter" contest)

No question, and there are instances where it is really valuable.

For example, I loved Virginia Miracle's series of Tweets from the WOMM-U conference last week...made me feel like I was there. Good value. Or, how Fred Wilson, twittered a VC event

I'm sure a few tools will come along to help refine which tweets I want to receive and which I don't. For now, I'm continuing to implement a multi-tiered approach, like Robert Scoble posted on noise reduction systems (one I suggest you follow).

The challenge in our digital environment is to recognize that:

"just because it is easy to publish/share info, doesn't mean it is easy for your audience to consume it."

Critical to remember (best example of this is when you get 300 pictures of your friend's kid's birthday party...and you need only 4, as I blogged on my personal site.)

Right now, I have a bit of Twitter Fatigue. There, I said it. I guess I'm not as cool as I want to be.

I won't give up, just be more rigorous in making sure that I am only listening to the highest quality channels.

Something to think about for our companies, you, and for me.

Add to the noise and reduce your audience's permission to communicate with them...a surefire road to irrelevancy.

I hear you. I took a couple weeks break from some of the social media world just to recharge and refocus.

BTW - It is hard to be a hip family guy...
